When you think of an Austin engagement session, your mind might go to the Hill Country. However, there is a distinct magic in the grit and neon of downtown. For couples who value authenticity, a documentary-style session captured on both digital and 35mm film offers a nostalgic, timeless feel.
Recently, I spent an afternoon wandering through the heart of the city to capture a story that felt less like a photoshoot and more like a date.
Starting at the Iconic Antone’s Photo Booth
We began the session at Antone’s Nightclub, a staple of the Austin music scene. While the stage has seen legends, the real hidden gem is their vintage photo booth. Consequently, the couple was able to relax immediately. The flash of the booth provided a candid, high-contrast look that looks incredible on film.
Furthermore, using a real chemical photo booth adds a layer of “tangible memory” that digital files simply cannot replicate. These strips of photos became the perfect starting point for their downtown adventure.
After we left the club, we moved toward the historic streets of downtown. Because we chose a documentary approach, I focused on the quiet moments between the landmarks.
Since 2026 is the year of “unposed” photography, we prioritized movement. For instance, the couple shared a laugh while dodging traffic on 5th Street and admired the historic architecture of the surrounding buildings. By using a mix of digital and 35mm film, I was able to capture the sharp details of the city alongside the grainy, romantic warmth of film.
To wrap up the Austin engagement session, we visited a local candy shop. The bright colors of the glass jars and neon signage provided a playful backdrop. While the couple shared a bag of sweets, I stayed in the background to capture their genuine interactions.
Ultimately, these sessions are about more than just “pretty pictures.” They are about documenting who you are in this specific moment in time. If you are looking for a photographer who values storytelling over stiff posing, I would love to help you plan your own urban Austin adventure.
